Things always look so much better from the outside.

Life is one huge veneer. It tends to be easier to see things at face value, but beneath it all is a lot of hurt and dirt.

My mom cleaned out our pantry this morning, and tonight it made me think about how my DC friends were so amazed at how clean and well-decorated our house is. By the looks of it, all is well and dandy.

But there’s a lot that’s left untold, and it’s fitting that I’ve been starting to watch the HBO series “Big Little Lies,” which tells the dark stories behind the lives of seemingly perfect families. Not only are they not perfect, but they are also deeply flawed and full of anger, bubbling until it spills over from time to time, or even explodes.

And can’t we all relate in some way? At least I can.
